How to use your Apple Watch optimally on vacation

May 29, 2023

The holiday season is coming – time to make some preparations! And time to take a closer look at the possibilities of gadgets you have at home, to take full advantage of all the features. For example, what can you do with your Apple Watch on vacation?

Note: these apps work on almost every Apple Watch, whether you wear the very expensive Apple Watch Ultra, or the very competitively priced Apple Watch SE!

The right apps

Super handy to have all important apps at your fingertips, so your phone can stay safely stored in your bag or pocket. Keep your hands free as much as possible, I always think. And with the right apps, you just have it a little easier. And actually, you can already move forward perfectly with Apple’s native apps! Here are my favorite apps:

  • 9292OV / NS Travel Planner. This way you always know where you need to be and what time you will arrive at your next destination. This way you can also plan quietly during your trip. Also useful is the countdown timer of, for example, the NS app, which shows how much time you have left until your next stop.
  • Travel apps: Depending on your travel destination, specific travel apps can be useful, such as TripAdvisor, Airbnb, Booking.com, or OpenTable. Also think of apps from your airline, to get instant notifications if there is a delay! This can help you find accommodation, restaurants, activities and attractions.
  • Maps is also an app that you should definitely not forget. With this you always know where to go. Searching may be easier via your iPhone, but after that you can navigate via your smartwatch. You can choose to navigate with directions, or navigate from the map… just what you like best. Tap the icon at the bottom center of the screen to switch between those modes.
  • Weather: We Dutch are known for our critical attitude towards the weather. Thanks to the Weather app on the Apple Watch, you know exactly what to expect — accurate to the hour, so you can adjust your clothes and activities accordingly.
  • Translator: If you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language, the Translator app on Apple Watch can be useful for translating simple sentences.
  • Camera remote: The Camera app on Apple Watch lets you control your iPhone and take photos from a distance, which can be useful for group photos or if you’ve placed your iPhone on a tripod.
  • Music: If you want to enjoy your favorite music during your vacation, the Music app on your Apple Watch can be useful for playing music without using your iPhone.

Best practices for Apple Watch

And of course, there are a few practical tips to get the most out of your Apple Watch during a holiday:

  1. Turn on “Power Reserve” mode: If you’re away from a charging station for an extended period of time, you can turn on Power Reserve mode to save battery. This will disable all features of your Apple Watch except the time display.
  2. Turn on “Do Not Disturb”: When you’re on vacation, you may not want to be disturbed by constant notifications and vibrations on your wrist. Therefore, turn on the “Do Not Disturb” mode to enjoy your holiday in peace.
  3. Bring an extra charging cable: Make sure you have an extra charging cable with you in case the original cable is lost or broken during your trip.
  4. Use the “Workout” app to track activities: Use the “Workout” app on your Apple Watch to track your activities, such as walking, running, cycling, or swimming. This can help monitor your physical activity during the holidays.
  5. Download offline maps: Download offline maps to your Apple Watch so you can always access the map without an internet connection. This is useful when you don’t have mobile data or Wi-Fi at your holiday destination.
  6. Use the “Breathe” app for relaxation: The “Breathe” app on the Apple Watch can help you relax and lower your stress levels through breathing exercises. This can be useful to use during long trips or when you feel stressed on vacation.
  7. Enable the “Find My” feature: If you’re afraid of losing your Apple Watch during your vacation, you can turn on the “Find My” feature. This allows you to find the location of your Apple Watch if you lose it.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your Apple Watch during your vacation and make sure it continues to work properly during your trip.
